The Office of Burundi Revenue (OBR), which hosted this important meeting just three weeks after the technical subcommittees, welcomes the progress made by the various technical groups (Domestic Taxes, Customs, Planning and Research, Human Resources, Legal and IT).
All EAC countries, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi, were represented. Other delegations such as Southern Sudan’s, participated in the discussions.
In this four-day meeting, the Technical Committee EARATC addressed several topics, including the provision of technical assistance to the tax authority of South Sudan as recommended during the 37th Commissioners General meeting, the harmonization of tax procedures, the strengthening of the capacity of auditors, Electronic Cargo Tracking System, and the finalization of the regional comparative report.
The Bujumbura meeting also discussed issues such as revenue performance, facilitation of international trade via the tax system, implementation of the One Stop Border Post concept, the creation of a tax dispute settlement mechanism and tax administrations’ staff motivation programs.
These meetings provide excellent opportunities to exchange and compare experiences from the different tax administrations in the region as noted by the OBR Head of Delegation, Ms Martine NIBASUMBA.
It should be noted that the recommendations from this meeting will be submitted to the Commissioners General of the EAC Revenue Administrations for approval in April / May 2015.
